Briefing Note – Corona Virus (Covid-19) and its Potential Impact on the South African Gambling Industry- April 2020
The recent global spread of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) has stirred up stringent measures in various countries from country lock downs, closure of schools and businesses,cancellation of sports events, as well institution of travel bans to and from countries of high risk. South Africa has not been left out of this following the upsurge in the number of COVID-19 cases confirmed daily since the first case reported on 5 March 2020. As a result, the President declared a state of National Disaster on 15 March 2020 and announced a number of measures to combat the further spreading of the virus in South Africa. Due to the fast growing number of confirmed cases which have now spread over to more provinces, the President announced an escalation of measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and a national lock down for 21 days with effect from midnight on Thursday 26 March 2020 under the National Disaster Management Act.
